Why We Switched to Texas Instruments Calculators (And Why You Should Too)

If you manage purchasing for an office or school, you should buy Texas Instruments calculators. Directly from a distributor. Not from the cheapest online listing.

The short version: we standardized on TI calculators—the TI-36X Pro for daily use, the TI-Nspire CX for engineers, and the BA II Plus for finance—and cut our annual calculator spend by about 15%. More importantly, I stopped getting complaints from the engineering team.

Real-world cost breakdown

What most people don't realize

What most people don't realize is that 'standard turnaround' often includes buffer time that vendors use to manage their production queue. With TI, we found a distributor who would ship within 2 business days—but they only do that for customers who order at least 10 units per model. That was easy for us, but I know smaller offices struggle with this.

To be fair, some dealers won't negotiate on small orders. I get why—they have overhead. But here's the thing: small doesn't mean unimportant. One more thing about the TI-Nspire

The TI-Nspire CX is a game-changer for engineers. But here's the catch: most people don't need the full suite. The TI-36X Pro does 90% of what the Nspire does for a fraction of the cost. I'd argue that unless your team is doing advanced calculus or statistical modeling, stick with the 36X Pro. Save the Nspire for the specialists.

Oh, and I should add: the BA II Plus is still the gold standard for finance. Our CFO won't use anything else.

The one thing you must check

Before you order, verify that the distributor can provide proper invoices with PO numbers and line-item details. We learned that the hard way. Also check return policies: TI calculators are durable, but we had a batch of 10 TI-36X Pros with a software glitch in 2022. The distributor replaced them with no questions asked because we had a contract. If we'd bought from a random online seller, we'd have been stuck.

One of my biggest regrets: not negotiating a volume discount earlier. If I'd consolidated orders across departments sooner, we'd have saved an extra 5-8% annually. That's about $300 per year sitting on the table.

Borderline cases

This advice works best if you're buying for a team of 10-100 people. If you're a one-person office buying a single calculator, you might not get the same pricing. In that case, I'd still recommend going with an authorized TI dealer—even for a single unit—because their support is better.

Also: if your team uses graphing calculators heavily (like daily for advanced work), the Nspire is worth the investment. If they only use it occasionally, the 36X Pro is fine. Don't overbuy.

Granted, this requires more upfront research. But it saves time later. As of January 2025, per USPS pricing, a standard letter costs $0.73. That's not much, but over 200 orders a year, it adds up. Same with calculators: small savings per unit add up across departments.

Bottom line: Texas Instruments calculators are the no-brainer choice for most offices. But the real savings come from choosing the right distributor. Check their invoicing, their volume pricing, and their return policy. If they tick those boxes, you're golden.
